Background: ICU nurses have work demands that require precision, speed, and a high level of responsibility, which can trigger physical and mental fatigue, thereby reducing concentration and alertness, potentially increasing the occurrence of NSIs (Needle Stick Injuries). Therefore, it is important to determine whether work fatigue has a relationship with the occurrence of NSIs among ICU nurses.

Objective: To determine the relationship between work fatigue and the incidence of NSI in ICU nurses.

Methods: This quantitative study, using a correlative analytical approach, was cross-sectional, involving 156 ICU nurses at the Gadjah Mada University Hospital (RSA UGM) in Yogyakarta. Data were collected using the KAUPK2 and Needlestick Injury Incidence questionnaires, and then analyzed using cross tabulations and chi-square.

Results: Occupational fatigue among ICU nurses at RSA UGM is high, with most experiencing decreased motivation, physical performance, and activity. Fatigue was more prevalent among younger nurses, females, and those with less than two years of service. NSI incidence also tended to occur in these same groups. The high proportion in this group does not necessarily indicate vulnerability but rather relates to the distribution of the study sample. Although fatigue could theoretically increase the incidence of NSI, statistical tests showed no significant association.

Conclusion: Occupational fatigue was not significantly associated with the incidence of NSI among ICU nurses at Gadjah Mada University Hospital. Other factors such as work experience, training, and procedures likely play a more significant role.
