This study explores and uncovers the ambivalent strategies as reflected in the narratives of novel A?l?m an-Nis?’ al-?ar?m by Fatima Mernissi. The narrative structure reveals that Mernissi uses ambivalence as a conscious narrative strategy. This analytical approach is necessary because previous studies have largely focused on her feminist thought within the patriarchal Moroccan context, without examining how the naratif strategy.
Ambivalence is examined through the lens of postcolonial theory, particularly as conceptualized by Homi K. Bhabha. Bhabha employs deconstruction to expose cultural instability, a condition analogous to the fluid relationship between signifier and signified in the production of meaning.
To uncover this strategy, the study analyzes narrative perspective using Gerard Genette’s theory of focalization, which identifies the narrator’s position in relation to events and characters. Through this lens, the analysis traces the narrator’s alignment with or detachment from certain characters and events, as well as the narrator’s shifting attitudes all of which signal ambivalence.
The findings demonstrate that focalization is not merely a technical device but an ideological strategy. Zero focalization positions the narrator as an omniscient voice embedding implicit critique, whereas internal focalization exposes conflicts of identity and the tension between tradition and modernity. Through the integration of narrative theory and postcolonial critique, this study shows that focalization serves as a key to uncovering ideological dynamics within literary texts.
