Background: Dyspepsia is one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders encountered in healthcare practice. Treatment using a herbal formulation of Blumea balsamifera (sembung), Amomum compactum (Java cardamom), and Curcuma longa (turmeric) can serve as an alternative therapy for dyspepsia. The objective of this research is determining the effectiveness of a herbal concoction made from sembung leaves, cardamom, and turmeric on symptoms improvement of dyspeptic patients and to assess the impact of this herbal remedy on improving the quality of life of these patients.
Methods: This study was an observational, prospective study with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The research was conducted from February to May 2025 at Klinik Pratama Hortus Medicus (UPF Yankestrad Tawangmangu). Subjects included dyspeptic patients aged >18 years, selected using a consecutive sampling method. Patients were administered a herbal decoction consisting of 4 grams of dried Blumea balsamifera leaves, 1 gram of dried Amomum compactum seeds, and 4 grams of dried Curcuma longa rhizome, with a treatment duration of 2 to 4 weeks. Therapeutic outcomes were assessed using two parameters: symptom severity based on the Dyspepsia Symptom Severity Index (DSSI) and quality of life measured by the Short-Form Nepean Dyspepsia Index Indonesia (SF-NDII) questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Microsoft Excel 2016.
Result: The study involved 40 patients aged between 20 and 65 years. The majority of participants were female (62.5%), employed status (77.5%), and irregular eating habits (70%). The analysis showed a significant difference between DSSI scores at the beginning (week 0) and end of therapy (week 2 or 4), with p<0>
Conclusion: The therapy using the herbal formulation of sembung, cardamom, and turmeric significantly reduces the severity of symptoms and significantly improves the quality of life for dyspepsia patients.
