SOUND OF DELIBERATION: ANALYSING THE ROLE OF INDONESIAN STUDENT MOVEMENT DURING THE 2024 INDONESIAN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

Penelitian ini mengkaji pengaruh gerakan mahasiswa Indonesia terhadap kemajuan demokrasi deliberatif selama pemilihan presiden 2024, yang dibingkai oleh teori tindakan komunikatif Jürgen Habermas. Berfokus pada interaksi antara aktivisme mahasiswa dan realisasi Demokrasi Pancasila, penelitian ini membahas apakah gerakan mahasiswa kontemporer telah secara efektif berkontribusi dalam mendorong musyawarah publik atau hanya mengulangi pola historis keterlibatan politik yang dangkal. Melalui pendekatan studi kasus, tesis ini menganalisis dinamika protes mahasiswa, aktivisme digital, dan kontestasi legitimasi pemilu, dengan menekankan bagaimana aksi-aksi tersebut mewujudkan prinsip-prinsip wacana rasional, perluasan ruang publik, dan perlawanan terhadap penjajahan sistemik atas dunia kehidupan. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa, terlepas dari tantangan yang ditimbulkan oleh manipulasi politik dan bias institusional, gerakan mahasiswa telah memainkan peran penting dalam merevitalisasi semangat musyawarah dalam demokrasi Indonesia, memanfaatkan platform digital untuk meningkatkan partisipasi publik dan menantang dominasi rasionalitas instrumental dalam pemerintahan. Studi ini menyimpulkan bahwa gerakan mahasiswa tetap menjadi kekuatan penting dalam memajukan cita-cita demokrasi deliberatif seperti yang diamanatkan dalam UUD 1945.

This study examines the influence of the Indonesian student movement on the advancement of deliberative democracy during the 2024 presidential election, framed by Jürgen Habermas’s theory of communicative action. Focusing on the interplay between student activism and the realization of Pancasila Democracy, the research addresses whether contemporary student movements have effectively contributed to fostering public deliberation or merely echoed historical patterns of superficial political engagement. Through a case study approach, the thesis analyzes the dynamics of student protests, digital activism, and the contestation of electoral legitimacy, emphasizing how these actions embody the principles of rational discourse, public sphere expansion, and resistance to systemic colonization of the lifeworld. Findings suggest that, despite challenges posed by political manipulation and institutional bias, student movements have played a significant role in revitalizing the spirit of deliberation within Indonesian democracy, leveraging digital platforms to enhance public participation and challenging the dominance of instrumental rationality in governance. The study concludes that the student movement remains a vital force in advancing the ideals of deliberative democracy as envisioned in the 1945 Constitution.
