TRANSLATION OF CULTURAL WORDS AND THEIR PROCEDURES IN THE INDONESIAN SUBTITLES OF THE MOVIE LEGALLY BLONDE

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi kata budaya yang ditemukan pada teks terjemahan Bahasa Indonesia dari film Legally Blonde, menganalisis prosedur penerjemahan yang digunakan, dan mengetahui jenis prosedur penerjemahan manakah yang paling banyak digunakan. Data yang dikumpulkan berasal dari ujaran asli Bahasa Inggris yang dituturkan oleh karakter pada film Legally Blonde dan teks terjemahan Bahasa Indonesia resmi dari Prime Video. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori prosedur penerjemahan dan kategorisasi kata budaya dari Newmark tahun 1988. Hasil temuan menunjukkan bahwa terdapat 62 kata budaya termasuk diantaranya 24 kata (38.7%) social organization, 19 kata (3.3%) social culture, 17 kata (27.4%) material culture, dan 2 kata (3.3%) ecology. Lalu, kata budaya tersebut dianalisis untuk mengetahui jenis prosedur penerjemahan yang digunakan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat 23 kata yang diterjemahkan menggunakan transference dengan persentase sebanyak 37.1%, diikuti oleh functional equivalent dengan 14 kata (22.6%), through translation dengan 8 kata (12.9%), descriptive equivalent dengan 6 kata (9.7%), naturalization dengan 5 kata (8.1%), couplets dengan 2 kata (3.2%), modulation dengan 2 kata (3.2%), cultural equivalent dengan 1 kata (1.6%), dan recognized translation dengan 1 kata (1.6%). Berdasarkan hasil temuan, transference tetap menjadi prosedur penerjemahan yang paling sering muncul, sejalan dengan penelitian-penelitian sebelumnya yang menggunakan teori yang sama dengan sumber data yang berbeda. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan kontribusi pada studi penerjemahan dengan meneliti penerjemahan kata budaya Amerika ke dalam teks bahasa Indonesia.

This research aims to identify cultural words found in the Indonesian subtitles of the movie Legally Blonde, analyze their translation procedures, and determine which type of translation procedure is the most frequently used. The data are collected from the original English utterances of the characters from the movie Legally Blonde and the official Indonesian subtitles by Prime Video. This research is conducted using Newmark’s 1988 cultural words categorization and translation procedure theory. The data taken are classified into each cultural word category. The findings show that there are 62 cultural words, involving 24 words (38.7%) of social organization, 19 words (30.6%) of social culture, 17 words (27.4%) of material culture, and 2 words (3.3%) of ecology. Then, the cultural words are analyzed to determine the type of translation procedure used. The result shows that 23 words are translated using transference with a frequency of 37.1%, it is followed by functional equivalent with 14 words (22.6%), through translation with 8 words (12.9%), descriptive equivalent with 6 words (9.7%), naturalization with 5 words (8.1%), couplets with 2 words (3.2%), modulation with 2 words (3.2%), cultural equivalent with 1 word (1.6%), and recognized translation with 1 word (1.6%). Based on the findings, transference remains the most frequently appearing translation procedure, which is aligned with previous studies that used the same theory with different data sources. This research is expected to contribute to translation studies by examining the translation of American cultural words into Indonesian subtitles.
