The Hero’s Journey in The Word for World is Forest and The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula K. Le Guin

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis perkembangan karakter dan pengaruh unsur intrinsik pada dua novela karya Ursula K. Le Guin, yaitu The Word for World is Forest dan The Lathe of Heaven. Le Guin dikenal sebagai penulis fiksi spekulatif yang karyanya sarat dengan kritik sosial, ekologis, dan moral, sehingga kedua teks ini dipilih untuk mengeksplorasi bagaimana tema kolonialisme, perlawanan, dan kebebasan dikonstruksikan melalui pembangunan karakter.

Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan intrinsik yang dipadukan dengan kerangka Hero’s Journey Joseph Campbell untuk memetakan transformasi tokoh utama. Data utama berupa narasi dari kedua novela dianalisis dengan teknik pembacaan dekat (close reading) untuk mengidentifikasi bagaimana setting, alur, konflik, dan sudut pandang membentuk perkembangan tokoh Selver dan George Orr. Analisis dilakukan secara komparatif untuk menyoroti persamaan dan perbedaan jalur perkembangan karakter keduanya.

Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Selver dalam The Word for World is Forest mengalami transformasi dari korban pasif menjadi pemimpin perlawanan akibat penindasan kolonial bangsa Terran. Konflik yang dihadapinya bersifat komunal dan ekologis, merefleksikan perubahan nilai dalam masyarakat Athshean. Sebaliknya, George Orr dalam The Lathe of Heaven menghadapi konflik yang bersifat personal melalui manipulasi mimpi oleh Dr. Haber, yang menyoroti kolonisasi pada ranah psikologis. Perjuangan Orr bersifat individual, menekankan pentingnya otonomi diri dalam membentuk realitas.

Pembahasan menunjukkan bahwa meskipun jalur perlawanan kedua tokoh berbeda, keduanya merepresentasikan kritik Le Guin terhadap dominasi dan menegaskan bagaimana unsur intrinsik membentuk dinamika narasi. Penelitian ini memperkaya kajian sastra Le Guin dengan menggabungkan struktur narasi dan pola mitologis, serta menunjukkan bahwa tokoh-tokoh Le Guin berjuang tidak hanya melawan penindasan eksternal, tetapi juga godaan untuk kehilangan kendali atas jati diri; sekaligus menawarkan refleksi atas harga kebebasan dan tanggung jawab moral.

This research aims to analyze character development and the influence of intrinsic elements in two novellas by Ursula K. Le Guin: The Word for World is Forest and The Lathe of Heaven. Le Guin is known for her speculative fiction that weaves social, ecological, and moral critique, making these two texts ideal for exploring how themes of colonialism, resistance, and freedom are constructed through characterization.

This study employs an intrinsic approach combined with Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey framework to map the transformation of the main characters. The primary data consists of narrative passages from both novellas, which are examined through close reading to identify how setting, plot, conflict, and point of view shape the development of Selver and George Orr. The analysis is conducted comparatively to highlight similarities and differences in their character arcs.

The results show that Selver in The Word for World is Forest transforms from a passive victim into a leader of resistance due to the oppressive colonial rule of the Terrans. His conflict is communal and ecological, reflecting a shift in the Athshean society’s values. In contrast, George Orr in The Lathe of Heaven faces a deeply personal conflict in the form of dream manipulation by Dr. Haber, which reveals the colonization of the psychological realm. Orr’s struggle is individual, emphasizing the fight for autonomy over one’s own reality.

The discussion highlights that although their paths differ, both characters embody Le Guin’s critique of domination and illustrate how intrinsic elements shape narrative dynamics. This study enriches literary analysis of Le Guin’s works by combining narrative structure with mythic patterns, and shows how Le Guin’s heroes confront not only external oppression but also the temptation to surrender their agency by offering a reflection on the cost of freedom and moral responsibility.
