Pip Fitz-Amobi's Gender Performativity and Investigative Power in Holly Jackson's A Good Girl's Guide to Murder Trilogy

Penelitian ini membahas gender performativity karakter Pip Fitz-Amobi dalam trilogi A Good Girl's Guide to Murder karya Holly Jackson. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan bagaimana Pip menampilkan performa gender yang memadukan sifat maskulin dan feminin, serta bagaimana performa tersebut memberinya keuntungan dalam perannya sebagai detektif. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori gender performativity dari Judith Butler yang memandang gender sebagai sesuatu yang dipertunjukkan melalui pengulangan tindakan sosial, serta teori gender-identified qualities dari Allan G. Johnson untuk mengidentifikasi sifat-sifat gender yang ditampilkan Pip dalam proses investigasinya. Metode yang digunakan adalah penelitian kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi pustaka. Data primer berupa narasi dari tiga novel dalam trilogi tersebut, sedangkan data sekunder berasal dari literatur akademik mengenai teori gender. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Pip tidak terikat pada stereotip gender tunggal. Ia secara strategis menampilkan sifat maskulin saat menghadapi bahaya atau ketidakadilan sistemik, sekaligus memanfaatkan sifat feminin dalam membangun kepercayaan dengan saksi dan korban. Perpaduan sifat-sifat ini menjadikannya lebih efektif sebagai detektif, karena ia mampu beradaptasi dengan konteks dan tuntutan investigasi secara fleksibel. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa performa gender Pip yang hibrid bukan hanya membentuk karakterisasi yang kompleks, tetapi juga memberinya keunggulan dalam mengungkap kebenaran. Pip merupakan representasi detektif muda yang menantang batas-batas gender tradisional dalam fiksi remaja.

This research discusses the gender performativity of the character Pip Fitz-Amobi in Holly Jackson's A Good Girl's Guide to Murder trilogy. This research aims to explain how Pip performs a gender performance that combines masculine and feminine traits, and how this performance gives her an advantage in her role as a detective. This study uses Judith Butler's theory of gender performativity, which views gender as something that is performed through the repetition of social actions, and Allan G. Johnson's theory of gender-identified qualities to identify the gender traits that Pip displays in her investigation process. The method used is qualitative research with a literature study approach. Primary data is in the form of narratives from the three novels in the trilogy, while secondary data comes from academic literature on gender theory. The results show that Pip is not bound to a single gender stereotype. She strategically displays masculine traits when facing danger or systemic injustice, while utilizing feminine traits in building trust with witnesses and victims. This combination of traits makes her more effective as a detective, as she is able to adapt to the context and demands of the investigation flexibly. This study shows that Pip's hybrid gender performance not only forms a complex characterization, but also gives her an edge in uncovering the truth. Pip represents a young detective who challenges traditional gender boundaries in teen fiction.
