This study is a contrastive analysis comparing the negation systems of Japanese and Indonesian. The research addresses three research questions: (1) the comparison of forms of negation markers in Japanese and Indonesian, (2) the structures comparison of negation in Japanese and Indonesian, and (3) the factors underlying the similarities and differences in the characteristics of negation in Japanese and Indonesian. The data sources for this research are the Kotonoha corpus and the Sketch Engine platform. The specific corpora used from Sketch Engine include the Indonesian Web (IndonesianWac) and Indonesian Web 2024 (idTenTen24). The contrastive analysis employed in this study is theoretical contrastive analysis. The analysis follows a theoretical contrastive framework and proceeds through three stages: description, juxtaposition, and comparison. To examine the structural aspects of negation, the study employs X-bar theory, a component of generative grammar.
The findings indicate that the similarities in the characteristics of negation between Japanese and Indonesian are evident in the forms of affixal negation markers, the syntactic position of negation nodes, and the grammatical relations between negation and voice, aspect, modality, subject, object, and the formation of modal constructions. In contrast, the differences lie in the form of affixal negation markers, the categorization and morphological processes of sentential negation, the grammatical relations between negation, tense and adverbials, and the syntactic movement of negation nodes. These similarities and differences are influenced by four key factors: (1) the notion of negation as a universal grammatical category, (2) language typology, (3) the word class of negation markers, and (4) the tense system.
