Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) motors are widely used in industrial applications due to their high efficiency. The challenge is that these motors are subject to fluctuations during the response to steady speed at increased loads which can reduce the efficiency of operating electrical power consumption. Therefore, it is necessary to apply and select control methods on BLDC motors.
In this study, a comparison of PID (Proportional Integral Derivative) and Fuzzy Logic control methods is conducted, which aims to improve the electrical power consumption efficiency of BLDC motor systems under various load mass conditions to achieve the desired steady speed. The increase in the efficiency of electrical power consumption is calculated as a percentage of the difference in electrical power consumption of the control system against the system without control by providing step input until the system reaches a convidence interval of 90-95% of its steady value.
The highest improvement in electrical power consumption efficiency of the BLDC motor system (43.81%) was achieved by Fuzzy Logic control at 1000 RPM, higher than PID control. However, at 2000 RPM speed, the highest efficiency improvement (15.78%) was obtained by PID control, higher than Fuzzy Logic control. Power consumption reduction was also observed in most test conditions, especially at low load mass and speed setpoint (0,01 kg; 1000 RPM).
