Methyl acrylate is a methyl ester derivative of acrylic acid. It is widely utilized as a monomer in the plastics industry to produce acrylic polymers. Methyl acrylate can be synthesized through a three-stage process. The first stage involves the partial oxidation of propylene using oxygen to produce acrolein. This is followed by the oxidation of acrolein into acrylic acid, and finally, an esterification reaction between acrylic acid and methanol yields methyl acrylate. The oxidation of propylene is carried out in the gas phase at a pressure of 3 atm and a temperature of 320°C within a multitube fixed-bed reactor. This reaction employs bismuth molybdate (Bi?Mo?O??) as a catalyst. Subsequently, the acrolein undergoes further gas-phase oxidation in a similar multitube fixed-bed reactor at 2,7 atm and 350°C, using vanadium molybdenum oxide (V?Mo?O??) as a catalyst. The final step is a liquid-phase esterification reaction between acrylic acid and methanol, occurring at 3 atm and 96°C in a series of three continuous stirred-tank reactors (CSTRs), catalysed by sulfuric acid.
The proposed methyl acrylate plant is to be constructed in the Cilegon Industrial Zone, Banten, on a site covering 8.8 hectares and employing a workforce of 308 personnel. The plant is designed for a continuous production capacity of 60,000 tonnes per year (24 hours, 330 days). with 99.5% purity, the plant will consume approximately 8,699.1 kg/h of propylene sourced from PT Chandra Asri Petrochemical and 5,078.8 kg/h of methanol. Additionally, the facility requires 36,846.53 kg/h of water, 582.77 kW of electrical power, and 59,450.17 kg/h of air to support the operational processes.
The fixed capital investment for the plant is estimated at USD 17,376,295.48 + IDR 26,953,136,765.60, while the working capital requirement stands at USD 21,838,790.49 + IDR 3,985,683,647.80. With an annual post-tax profit of USD 4,272,607.74, the project yields a ROI of 28.78?fore tax and 22.45?ter tax. POT is 2.65 years before tax and 3.18 years after tax. The Break-Even Point (BEP) is calculated at 51.11%, the Shut-Down Point (SDP) at 32.42%, and the Discounted Cash Flow Rate of Return (DCFRR) at 16549%. In conclusion, the establishment of a methyl acrylate plant based on propylene via acrylic acid, with a production capacity of 60,000 tonnes per annum, demonstrates strong economic feasibility and is deemed viable and attractive for further consideration.
