New Historicism dan Struktur Naratif dalam Representasi Karakter Thomas Muntzer pada Novel La guerre des pauvres Karya Eric Vuillard

Penelitian ini membahas tentang fakta-fakta sejarah serta struktur naratif dalam novel sejarah La guerre des pauvres karya Éric Vuillard yang memuat representasi dari figur sejarah Thomas Müntzer dalam keterlibatannya pada peristiwa Pemberontakan Buruh dan Petani 1525 di masa Kekaisaran Romawi Suci. Kedua unsur tersebut saling berkaitan dalam hubungannya dengan usaha narator untuk merepresentasikan karakter Thomas Müntzer di dalam novel. Narator menunjukkan sisi subjektifnya dengan memanfaatkan dan memanipulasi fakta-fakta sejarah sebagai alat untuk mentransmisikan pandangan ideologinya lewat narasinya. Narator secara langsung menuliskan pada novel bahwa sumber-sumber catatan sejarah yang dia jadikan referensi ditulis oleh sejarawan-sejarawan memiliki latar belakang ideologi Marxisme. Berdasarkan permasalahan tersebut, dengan menggunakan pendekatan analisis karya sastra New Historicism dari Stephen Greenblatt dilengkapi beberapa pandangan dari kritikus new historicism lainnya, fakta-fakta sejarah yang muncul pada novel dianalisis dengan melakukan pembacaan novel secara paralel terhadap catatan-catatan sejarah yang berkorelasi. Tujuannya adalah untuk mengungkap, memverifikasi, dan menyajikan pendapat lain serta fakta-fakta sejarah dari sejarawan-sejarawan nonmarxis mengenai tokoh Thomas Müntzer. Lebih lanjut, digunakan juga pendekatan naratologi dari Gérard Genette untuk mengeksplorasi dan menganalisis struktur naratif serta pola-pola manipulasi fakta sejarah yang dilakukan oleh narator di dalam teks naratifnya. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa representasi karakter Thomas Müntzer di dalam novel sangat terpengaruh dengan ideologi tertentu—ideologi Marxisme. Selain itu, narator juga menyandang status narator yang tidak dapat dipercaya, disebabkan karena narator telah terbukti melakukan praktik manipulasi fakta sejarah demi obsesinya terhadap pandangan ideologinya dengan mereproduksi narasi mengenai fakta sejarah yang tidak valid di sepanjang plot cerita hingga beberapa kali, terlepas dari pembelaannya melalui argumen-argumen pribadinya mengenai kajian sejarah yang justru kontradiktif dengan apa yang dia lakukan di dalam novel.

This study examines the historical facts and the narrative structures in Éric Vuillard's La guerre des pauvres, which contains the representation of the historical figure Thomas Müntzer for his involvement in the 1525 Peasants’ War during the Holy Roman Empire period. These two elements are interrelated in relation to the narrator's attempt to represent the character of Thomas Müntzer in the story. The narrator shows his subjective side by utilising and manipulating historical facts as a tool to transmit his ideological views through his narrative. The narrator directly writes in the novel that the sources of historical records that he uses as references were written by historians with Marxist ideological backgrounds. Based on these problems, using Stephen Greenblatt's New Historicism literary analysis approach complemented by several views from other new historicism critics, the historical facts that appear in the novel are analysed by reading the novel in parallel methods to correlated historical records. The aim is to uncover, verify, and present other opinions as well as historical facts from non-Marxist historians about the figure of Thomas Müntzer. Furthermore, Gérard Genette's narratological approach is used to explore and analyse the narrative structures and patterns of manipulation of historical facts by the narrator in the narrative text. The results of this study show that the representation of Thomas Müntzer's character in the novel is very influenced by a certain ideology—the ideology of Marxism. In addition, the narrator also holds the status of an unreliable narrator, because he has been proven to manipulate historical facts for the sake of his obsession with his ideological views by reproducing narratives about invalid historical facts throughout the plot of the story several times, despite his defence through his personal arguments about historical studies which are contradictory to what he did in the novel.
