Skripsi ini meneliti bagaimana novel We Were Liars selaras atau sesuai dengan teori dekonstruksi. Penelitian ini mengeksplorasi teknik narasi yang menciptakan ambiguitas, narasi Cadence yang tidak dapat diandalkan, dan sejauh mana novel ini selaras dengan teori dekonstruksi itu sendiri. Penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa narasi Cadence tidak sempurna karena rentan terhadap kesalahan karena ambiguitas yang disebabkan oleh beberapa faktor, seperti struktur narrative nonlinier dan penggunaan bahasa kiasan, serta kehilangan ingatan yang disebabkan oleh trauma yang menyebabkan dia menjadi narator yang tidak dapat diandalkan. Penelitian ini menerapkan teori dekonstruksi pada ambiguitas-ambiguitas tersebut, menganalisis ketidakstabilan, penundaan makna secara terus menerus, dan membalik hierarki oposisi biner yang ada pada novel. Penelitian ini telah menganalisis lebih lanjut bagaimana elemen-elemen dalam novel ini selaras dan mencerminkan teori dekonstruksi, dan berkontribusi pada pemahaman ketidakstabilan makna dalam sastra kontemporer.

This thesis examined how the novel, We Were Liars, aligned with the deconstruction theory. It explored the narrative techniques that create ambiguity, Cadence’s unreliable narration, and the extent of how the novel aligns with the deconstruction theory itself. The study revealed that Cadence’s narration is fallible due to ambiguities caused by several factors, such as her nonlinear storytelling and figurative language, as well as her trauma-induced memory loss causing her to become an unreliable narrator. The study has applied the deconstruction theory to these ambiguities, analysing its instability, continuous deferral of meaning, and flipping the hierarchy of existing binary oppositions. The study has further analysed how these elements in the novel aligned and reflect the deconstruction theory, and contributed to the understanding of meaning’s instability in contemporary literature.
