Workers exposed to hot environments, whether due to
physical activity or extreme heat, are at risk of experiencing increased heat
strain. This condition can negatively impact health, comfort, and work
productivity. One effective method to reduce heat strain is the application of
body cooling strategies. This study aims to evaluate the effect of the fan mist
cooling method in reducing levels of heat strain among individuals performing
activities in a hot environment.
The study involved 12 male university students (aged 22.2 ±
2.3 years) who performed treadmill walking for 2x30 minutes
each at an intensity equivalent to 70% of their maximum heart rate (HRmax).
The experiment was conducted in a controlled chamber simulating outdoor working
conditions (WBGT = 28.9 ± 0.48ºC; relative humidity = 67.6 ±
6.53%; air temperature = 33 ± 0.5ºC; radiant heat = 625.2 ± 11.48
W/m²). Facial cooling was applied during the rest and recovery phases. The
experiment consisted of three conditions: fan cooling without mist (FC),
with continuous mist (CM), and with intermittent mist (IM).
The results showed that the addition of mist did not
have a significant effect on most physiological and subjective parameters
compared to using a cooling fan alone. However, mist application, particularly
intermittent mist (IM),
significantly reduced sweat rate and sweating sensation during rest.
Furthermore, IM was found to improve cognitive performance compared to
the CM condition. Therefore, intermittent fan mist cooling shows
potential as a more effective cooling strategy for reducing heat strain and maintaining
work performance in hot environments.
