The lips represent a particularly vulnerable area of the skin due to the absence of a protective stratum corneum, necessitating the use of cosmetic products capable of providing both moisturization and photoprotection. This study aimed to formulate a lip balm incorporating red dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus) peel extract, a natural source rich in flavonoids and phenolic compounds with antioxidant and UV-protective properties. The extract was formulated into an optimized lip balm preparation using almond oil as an emollient and propylene glycol as a humectant.
The extraction of red dragon fruit peel was carried out via maceration using 96% ethanol, followed by evaluation of free radical scavenging activity through the DPPH assay and determination of SPF values using UV-visible spectrophotometry. The lip balm formulation was optimized using the Simplex Lattice Design (SLD) approach and assessed for pH, melting point, hardness, and physical stability via freeze-thaw testing.
The extract yielded 2.54%, exhibited an SPF value of 32.18 at a concentration of 3000 ppm, and exhibited a free radical scavenging activity with an IC?? of 171.01 ppm. The optimized formulation, comprising 10.1982% almond oil and 14.8018% propylene glycol, resulted in a pink-colored lip balm with a pH of 6.43, a melting point of 52.67°C, and a hardness of 36.380 N/m². This formulation exhibited satisfactory physical stability during storage, as indicated by the absence of significant changes in physicochemical properties following freeze-thaw cycling.
