Chinese American mothers' roles in imparting Chinese cultural values to their Americanized Daughters :: A Study on Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club

Tesis ini berusaha mengungkapkan peranan ibu-ibu Cina Amerika mewariskan nilai-nilai budaya Cina kepada anak-anak perempuan yang telah teramerikanisasi. Studi ini berusaha menjelaskan tiga tujuan 1). Permasalahan nilai-nilai budaya Cina dalam budaya dominan; 2). Usaha ibu-ibu Cina Amerika menanamkan nilai-nilai Cina kepada anak-anak mereka yang telah teramerikanisasi; dan 3). Alasan ibu-ibu mengapa harus menanamkan nail-nilai Cina lagi kepada anak-anak mereka yang sudah memilih nilai Amerika. Untuk memperoleh hasil analisis yang komprehensif, tesis ini menggunakan pendekatan interdisipliner, yang memanfaatkan berbagai perspektif dari beberapa displin ilmu yang relevan sebagai berikut: sosiologi, sejarah, sastra, psikologi dan pengkajian wanita. Hasil studi ini menunjukkan bahwa nilai-nilai budaya Cina menghadapi masalah dengan budaya dominan yang dipraktekkan oleh generasi baru Cina. Permasalahan itu adalah: a). Kesulitan bahasa menghalangi mereka untuk saling memahami nilai-nalai yang berbeda antara anak dan ibu. b). Ketidakpahaman dan penolakan anak-anak mereka terhadap nilai budaya Cina. c). Konflik antara ibu-ibu Cina dengan anak-anak mereka; dan d). Persepsi yang berbeda anatara ibu-ibu dengan anak-anak mereka. Permasalahan diatas mendesak ibu-ibu Cina berperan aktif dan berhasil menanamkan nilai budaya mereka dengan: Mendirikan perkumpuluan untuk melestarikan nilai-nilai budaya Cina ke depan. Menceritakan mitos-mitos yang mengandung nilai luhur Cina, serta membentuk kekuatan dan kepercayaan diri pada anak-anak mereka dalam upaya membebaskan diri dari jeritan diskriminasi rasial dan gender; dan mendorong anakanak mereka mengunjungi Cina. Ada tiga alasan para ibu Cina untuk menanamkan nilai-nilai mereka kepada anakanak yaitu: pertama, sebagai kewajiban dari Tuhan yang menurut tradisi Cina menjadi tugas mulia ibu-ibu; Kkedua adalah nilai Cina masih sangat relevan dengan kehidupan anak-anak mereka di Amerika dalam kaitannya dengan diskriminasi ras dan gender. Alasan terakhir ibu-ibu untuk melestarikan nilai-nilai mereka adalah membentuk kepribadian ganda pada anak-anak perempuan mereka yang berimbang antara nilai-nilai Cina dan Amerika sehingga harmonis dengan diri mereka sendiri dan harmonis pula dengan masyarakat multikultural mereka.

This thesis is an attempt to reveal Chinese American mothers’ roles in inheriting their Chinese cultural values to their Americanized daughters. This literary study explores Amy Tan’s The Joy Luck Club as the mental evidence to explain three objectives of this study. 1). The problems of Chinese American cultural values with American dominant culture; 2). The Chinese American mothers’ efforts to impart the Chinese cultural values to the Americanized daughters; and 3). The mothers’ reasons to impart their values to their Americanized daughters. In order to have a comprehensive result of the analysis, this thesis applies interdisciplinary approach, the use of various perspectives from some relevant disciplines to view the subject of the study, specially the viewpoints of sociology, history, literature, psychology, and woman studies. The result of this study shows that .the Chinese American cultural values have problems with the dominant culture that the Chinese American new generation or daughters believe and practice. The problems are: a). Language gap that prevents both mothers and daughters to understand their different cultural values. b). The daughters’ lack and refusal to the Chinese cultural values. c). The conflict between the Chinese mothers and their daughters. d). The different perception toward Chinese and American cultural values. These problems insist the mothers’ roles to make the daughters inherit the Chinese cultural values through some efforts: First, the mothers reestablish a woman club, the Joy Luck Club, to help one another preserve the Chinese cultural values by involving their Americanized daughters to build their commitment to maintain the Chinese culture in the future. Second, they tell the Chinese stories to shape their daughters’ hybrid character and help them build their strength and self-confidence to release themselves from gender and racial discrimination in their marriage and carrier from their white husbands who have humiliated them. Third, they build the daughters’ strong bond with their Chinese family and culture in China by giving the advice and financial support to revisit China. The mothers’ reasons to keep taking efforts to impart the Chinese values to their daughters are: firstly, to preserve their cultural values for the future generation is an obligatory task from the heaven that traditionally becomes the mothers’ cultural responsibility. Secondly, The mothers think that the Chinese cultural values are still relevant to their daughter’ recent life in America to face the gender and racial discrimination. The last reason of the mothers is to shape the daughters’ hybrid or balance character from both Chinese and American values in order to be harmonious with themselves and with their multicultural society.
