Climate change has become a continuously discussed phenomenon over the past few decades. Although often referred to as the lungs of the world, Indonesia is also experiencing the impacts of climate change. To disseminate this issue, the Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), publishes information related to climate change on its official website. Legally, KLHK is the institution most responsible for addressing climate change in Indonesia.
Based on this background, this study aims to analyze the discourse of climate change on KLHK’s website through an ecolinguistics lens. The analysis focuses on three main aspects: 1) the themes that emerge in the climate change discourse on the KLHK website, 2) the linguistic strategies used to construct these themes, and 3) the reasons behind the emergence of these themes. These aspects are analyzed and interpreted using the ecolinguistics framework proposed by Stibbe (2015).
This study employs a corpus-based discourse studies (CADS) method as developed by Baker & McEnery (2015). A specialized corpus named KLHK Climate Change was constructed as the main data source, consisting of 224 news articles published on the KLHK website between 2015 and 2023. The corpus was uploaded to the Sketch Engine software and analyzed using the features of keywords, concordance, collocation, and word sketch.
The findings indicate that, ecologically, the climate change discourse constructed by KLHK is ambivalent. On one hand, KLHK emphasizes the importance of addressing climate change, but on the other hand, it lacks discussion on ecological elements. The dominant theme in the discourse is the government, which is portrayed as the main actor in adaptation and mitigation efforts through various agendas. However, the government is notably absent as an actor in the mitigation theme that discusses concrete climate actions in Indonesia. Furthermore, the climate change discourse on the KLHK website tends to be anthropocentric, as it focuses on humans while entirely omitting non-human entities from the discussion. This research contributes to the mapping of themes in climate change discourse that can be utilized to evaluate climate policy communication or reporting in Indonesia.
