An optimal facility layout plays a crucial role in enhancing a company's operational efficiency. A well-designed layout not only considers material flow efficiency but also incorporates workplace safety and space constraints, including unequal row lengths. Workplace safety is a critical factor in layout design to minimize the risk of accidents and create a safer working environment. Additionally, challenges related to unequal areas must be addressed, particularly in industries with fixed facilities that cannot be relocated, such as AGV parking areas, offices, and warehouses. If not properly managed, these imbalances can disrupt material flow and reduce operational efficiency. Therefore, this study aims to develop a Multi-Row Layout Problem (MRLP) model that incorporates safety aspects through the implementation of safe distances between facilities and accommodates unequal row lengths to better reflect real-world industrial conditions.
To optimize the layout, this study employs both exact and metaheuristic approaches, namely Gurobi Optimizer – Epsilon Constraint, Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II), and Archived Multi-Objective Simulated Annealing (AMOSA). These methods enable layout optimization by minimizing weighted travelled distance and penalty due to safety violations, while also considering unequal row lengths.
The results of this study indicate that the Gurobi Optimizer outperforms both NSGA-II and AMOSA in solving the multi-row layout problem. Additionally, the number of rows has a significant impact on costs, where an increase in the number of rows tends to reduce weighted travelled distance but leads to higher penalty due to workplace safety violations.
