Post Pandemic State: Necropolitics and Subject Actions in Stephen King's The Stand

Pandemi adalah sumber ketakutan dan keresahan dalam masyarakat—memproyeksikan kematian manusia dan kerapuhan struktur masyarakat. Setelahnya, berlangsung disfungsi peraturan menurut kekuasaan kedaulatan untuk mengatasi krisis ini. Novel The Stand karya Stephen King mengeksplorasi ketakutan ini melalui narasi pandemi. Pasca pandemi dalam The Stand tidak hanya merefleksikan kematian fisik, tetapi juga mekanisme sosial dan politik kekuasaan yang menentukan kematian masyarakat secara perlahan. Penelitian ini menganalisis konsep nekropolitik pada saat keadaan pasca pandemi dalam novel The Stand karya Stephen King dengan menggunakan perspektif nekropolitik Achille Mbembe dan pendekatan narasi pandemi. Dua pertanyaan penelitian yang mendasari analisis ini: (1) bagaimana keadaan pasca pandemi dalam The Stand menggambarkan nekropolitik? (2) bagaimana tindakan subjek terhadap nekropolitik dalam The Stand? Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif yang berfokus pada mekanisme kontrol masyarakat, penggambaran kematian, dan interaksi karakter dalam novel. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah deskripsi keadaan pasca pandemi sebagai sebuah keadaan pengepungan yang menggambarkan praktik nekropolitik dalam The Stand; dan terbentuknya dua jenis keputusan subjek yang menentukan empat jenis tindakan subjek: pertama, eksploitasi keadaan pasca pandemi yang menginisiasi 1) pemanfaatan necropower; kedua, kelangsungan hidup tubuh sebagai prioritas yang mengarah pada 2) submisi dan akomodasi, 3) perlawanan dan pemberontakan, serta 4) ambiguitas dan kontradiksi. Implikasi penelitian ini merujuk pada narasi pandemi The Stand dalam menegosiasikan gagasan kemanusiaan sebagai aspirasi untuk membangun perdamaian dan menetralisir ketakutan akan potensi penerapan necropolitik akibat pandemi.

The pandemic is a source of fear and disruption in society—projecting both human mortality and the fragility of societal structures. Thereafter, dysfunction of the regulation is operated according to the sovereignty power to excel this crisis. Stephen King’s The Stand explores this fear through a pandemic narrative. The post pandemic in The Stand reflects not only physical death but also the social and political mechanisms of power that determine the society’s slow death. This research analyzes the concept of necropolitics in a post pandemic state through the Achille Mbembe’s necropolitics and pandemic narrative approach in Stephen King’s The Stand. Two research questions guide this analysis: (1) how does the post pandemic state in The Stand portray necropolitics? (2) how do subject acts towards necropolitics in The Stand?. The research applies a qualitative method focusing on societal control mechanisms, depictions of death, and characters interactions in the novel. The results of this research are the description of the post pandemic as a state of siege in The Stand that portrays the necropolitical practices; and the formation of two types of subject strategies that determine four types of subject actions: first, exploitation of post pandemic state—initiates to 1) utilization of necropower; second, body survival as priority—leads to 2) submission and accommodation, 3) resistance and rebellion, and 4) ambiguity and contradiction. This research implicates how The Stand negotiates the idea of humanity as an aspiration to build peace and neutralize the fear of potential necropolitics implementation due to the pandemic.
