This study examines the development and dynamics of the leather craft industry in Magetan District from the 1970s to 2002 using historical research methods. This research is motivated by the development of the industrial sector in Indonesia after the implementation of REPELITA II. Magetan Regency, with its geographical advantages and tradition of large-scale livestock farming, has developed into one of the national centers of the leather industry through two main channels: the tanning industry and the leather craft industry. Through the leather industry, it has also had an impact on local economic growth, resulting in significant changes to the socio-economic condition of the community, particularly in villages and sub-districts that serve as craft centers.
This study documents changes in business forms, production patterns, and the institutional roles of both local communities, cooperatives, and the government in supporting the leather craft industry. Through analysis of archives, interviews, newspapers, and literature studies, this study attempts to describe how the interaction between geographical factors, government policies, and local craftsmen's initiatives has shaped the leather craft industry in Magetan District until now. This study also highlights the challenges faced by industry players, especially during the economic crisis of the late 1990s. Through this study, it is known how the synergy between the tanning industry and the craft industry has created a strong supply chain, thus supporting the sustainability and increasing the competitiveness of craft product from Magetan. in addition, the shift from larger-scale products to home craft has also influenced the social and economic structure of the local community.
