Pemanfaatan tenaga air untuk berbagai kebutuhan energi telah dikenal sejak lama, mulai dengan teknologi sederhana seperti kincir air yang banyak ditemukan di pedesaan, sampai pada teknologi canggih yang menggunakan berbagai jenis turbin. Sejak tahun 1981 sampai sekarang di Desa Aromantai telah memanfaatkan teknologi sederhana kincir air untuk menghasilkan listrik. Masyarakat Desa Aromantai masih banyak yang belum memiliki penerangan listrik, sedangkan daya yang dihasilkan Pembangkit Listrik Tenaga Kincir Air (PLTKA) unit III masih dapat ditingkatkan dengan memanfaatkan potensi Sungai Air Hitam yang ada. Penelitian ini dilakukan bertujuan untuk mengkaji seberapa besar potensi ketersediaan air pada daerah aliran sungai Air Hitam Desa Aromantai yang dapat dimanfaatkan untuk mengoptimalkan daya yang dihasilkan oleh PLTKA unit III. Hasil dari optimalisasi ini diharapkan dapat memenuhi sebagian kebutuhan listrik masyarakat Desa Aromantai. Hasil penelitian dan analisis data, dengan debit yang dimanfaatkan untuk optimalisasi sebesar 1,28 m3/det menghasilkan daya output sebesar 17,09 kW atau meningkat 35,41% dibanding dengan yang ada

The utilization of water energy for various energy necessities has been known for many years, began with the simple technology such as water wheel that is frequently found in rural area up to the high technology that uses various kinds of turbine. Since 1981 up to now, Aromantai village has been using the simple technology of water-wheel to produce electrical power. There are still many people living in that village who do not use any electrical illumination yet, while the power that has been produced by the Water-wheel Power Plant Unit III could be still increased by means of the existing potential of the Air Hitam River. This research was conducted to investigate how large the potential of water supply on the Air Hitam River Stream in Aromantai that can be used to optimize the power produced by the Water-wheel Power Plant Unit III. The result of the optimizing is expected to fulfill some electrical energy needs of the people in Aromantai. The result of this research and the data analysis indicated that the discharge of 1.28 m3/sec that had been utilized for optimizing produced an output power for about 17.09 kW. In other words, it could increase the power for about 35.41% compared to what existed. Key words: Optimizing, Water-wheel Power Plant, Aromantai Village
