This research aims to reveal the paranoid personality disorder of the main character, which includes its symptoms, causal factors, and effects portrayed in an Egyptian author, Raja` ‘Alaisy’s short story "al-Qabihu wa an-Nasu". There are two theoretical foundations used in this research. First, a structural theory focusing on the analysis of the main character and his characterization. Second, a literary psychology theory that utilizes the concept of abnormal psychology to uncover the symptoms, causes, and effects of the paranoid personality disorder experienced by the main character.
Based on the research, it is known that the main character of this short story is a man reffered as “he.”. The man is physiologically depicted as an unattractive man; psychologically represented intelligent but has low self-esteem, pessimistic, and vindictive; and sociologically portrayed as a victim of bullying who struggles to build relationships with others. The man exhibits symptoms of paranoid personality disorder, including: (1) pervasive suspicion that others have hostile intentions; (2) doubting the goodwill of others; (3) reluctance to engage with others; (4) interpreting hidden meanings into benign remarks or events; and (5) persistently bears grudges. The causal factors of the paranoid personality disorder he experiences are social factors, specifically bullying and childhood neglect. The effects of his paranoid personality disorder manifest as displaced and directed aggressive behaviors e.g. desire to take revenge and attack.
