Background: Nasopharyngeal cancer(NPC) is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in Southeast Asia. In Indonesia, it is estimated that 10,000 cases of NPC are diagnosed yearly. Patient with locally advanced NPC undergo concurrent chemoradiotherapy which also causes weight loss. Weight loss defines malnutrition and could lead to reduced quality of life and decreased survival. Objective: To research the influence of grade III weight loss on the progression free survival of patients with locally advanced nasopharyngeal cancer who have completed concurrent chemoradiotherapy. Method: Retrospective study was done on 50 patients with locally advanced nasopharyngeal cancer. Patient’s weight was measured upon diagnosis and once again completion of chemoradiotherapy. The percentage of weight loss is calculated and patient followed up to see if he/she has progression of the disease. The data for weight and progression of disease were taken from the medical records. Results: The patients had mean age of 45.22 years old (range 18 to 60 years old). 16 patients had progression of disease and median progression free survival is 18 months. Conclusion: No significant association was found between weight loss and progression with 20% weight loss as cut off point between groups. However, when 10% was used as the cut off point, there seemed to be trend that those with higher weight loss than 10% have a shorter progression free survival in the long term.
