The healthcare service industry in Indonesia, particularly in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, is experiencing increasing competition. With 76 hospitals in the region, 46 of which are private, Bethesda Hospital Yogyakarta—the oldest private hospital in the area—faces significant challenges in sustaining its competitive edge. Therefore, the management of Bethesda Hospital recognizes the need to identify its sustainable competitive advantages and disadvantages.
This study aims to identify the strengths and weaknesses within the healthcare service industry's value chain and evaluate the key attributes contributing to Bethesda Hospital’s sustainable competitive advantages and disadvantages. The findings will help the hospital enhance long-term customer preference and solidify its strategic standing in the industry.
A qualitative descriptive research approach was employed, using a single-case (holistic) study design. Data collection was carried out through observations and in-depth interviews with both internal and external stakeholders. The gathered data was analyzed to identify strengths and weaknesses within the healthcare service industry's value chain. Each factor was then assessed based on four key competitive criteria: valuable, rare/common, imitability/corrective, and sustainable. To validate the results, a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) was conducted with Bethesda Hospital’s board of directors.
The findings indicate that Bethesda Hospital possesses seven key strengths contributing to its sustainable competitive advantage: (1) its strong reputation spanning over 125 years, making it a trusted healthcare provider in Yogyakarta and beyond; (2) its status as a non-profit private teaching hospital; (3) its strategic location in the heart of Yogyakarta; (4) The Stroke Center's flagship service, trusted by the community and consistently achieving Gold-Diamond status from the World Stroke Organization, attained Diamond status in Q3 2024; (5) its efficient and non-discriminatory emergency services; (6) its institutional motto, “Tolong dulu urusan belakang,” which is embedded in its organizational culture; and (7) its commitment to Christian values, such as love, dedication to service, and being a channel of blessings. This study did not identify any significant weaknesses that qualify as sustainable competitive disadvantages for Bethesda Hospital. Each identified strength or weakness has strategic implications that can be leveraged by Bethesda Hospital in formulating its long-term strategy.
