This research focuses on the documentary Before the Flood (2016), which explores the climate change crisis by depicting the destructive impact of human activities on living beings and the global environment. The purpose of this research is to systematically uncover the contradictions and alignments of Paul W. Taylor's principle of biocentrism in Before the Flood. This theory was chosen as an analytical framework that offers a critical perspective on the relationship between humans and nature that places the inherent worth of every living being as an absolute moral foundation. The method used is philosophical hermeneutics in a literature-based qualitative approach to actual problems. This study examines the movie based on the basic principles of Paul W. Taylor's biocentrism through methodical elements of description, interpretation, heuristics, and critical reflection.
The results show that first, climate change is the main environmental issue raised in the film caused by natural factors and human activities such as natural exploitation, the fossil fuel industry, deforestation, and the agricultural industry, which then have an impact on ecosystems and non-human beings; second, the basic principles of Paul W. Taylor's biocentrism consist of a biocentric view of nature. Taylor consists of a biocentric view of nature, respect for nature, and a system of rules and moral principles; third, the film Before the Flood does not fully visualize the main principles of Taylor's biocentrism, namely the lack of discussion of inherent worth and there is an anthropocentric bias in the visualization in the film. However, the film is in line with some of Taylor's biocentrism principles such as the rejection of human superiority, the representation of ecological interdependence systems, and moral rules and principles that are relevant to understanding the complexity of climate change as a moral and ecological issue.
