Background: Traffic accidents are unintentional incidents involving vehicles or
other road users, often resulting in casualties or property damage. In Indonesia, the
number of traffic accidents continues to rise, particularly among motorcycle users.
According to data from the Yogyakarta Regional Police in 2022, there were 7,830
accident cases. The causes of accidents include human factors, vehicle conditions,
environmental factors, and weather conditions.
Objective: This study aims to compare the types and locations of injuries in traffic
accident victims between motorcycles and cars, analyze the relationship between
safety equipment usage and injury location, and identify injury location differences
based on the victim's position as a driver or passenger.
Method: This study uses a descriptive observational design with a cross-sectional
research approach. It utilizes secondary data from the medical records of traffic
accident patients treated at the emergency department of RSUP Dr. Sardjito from
January 2019 to December 2023. The data were then analyzed using the chi-square
test.
Results: This study found 238 traffic accident cases, with the majority involving
motorcycle users. Victims were predominantly male, aged 17–25, and mostly
students. Blunt injuries to the head and extremities were more common among
motorcyclists, while sharp injuries to the head and chest were more frequent among
car users. The use of safety equipment influenced the location of injuries, and the
victim's position, with drivers more often sustaining head injuries and passengers
experiencing chest injuries.
Conclusion: This study shows a significant difference in the type and location of
injuries between motorcycle and car users. Blunt injuries were more common among
motorcyclists, while sharp injuries were more frequent among car users. The majority
of victims were male, aged 17–25, and students. The use of safety equipment reduced
the severity of injuries, and the victim's position affected injury location, with drivers
more often sustaining head injuries, while passengers experienced chest injuries.
