Background: Low Birth Weight Infants (LBW) remain a significant concern in Indonesia's healthcare system. Recent data from 2023 indicate that the prevalence of LBW births reached 12.54%, contributing significantly to neonatal mortality and morbidity, such as asphyxia and infections. Mothers caring for LBW infants after discharge often experience anxiety and concerns, particularly related to their physical and emotional readiness and the limited support from family. Maternal readiness to care for LBW infants post-discharge is strongly influenced by family support, which plays a crucial role in preparing mothers to face the challenges of caring for LBW infants at home.
Research Objective: To determine the correlation between family support and maternal readiness for the discharge of LBW infants in the Perinatal Ward of Dr. Sardjito Hospital Yogyakarta.
Method: This research is a descriptive correlational study with a cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 55 mothers with LBW infants treated at Dr. Sardjito Hospital. Spearman’s rho test was used to identify the correlation between family support levels and maternal readiness for LBW infant discharge.
Results: The majority of mothers had good family support, with 50 respondents (90%) showing adequate readiness for discharge, with a score of 193 (maximum score 220). Spearman's Rho analysis indicated a positive correlation between family support and maternal readiness for LBW infant discharge with a correlation coefficient of 0.418 and significance level p = 0.01.
Conclusion: There is a strong correlation between the support provided by the family and maternal readiness for the discharge of LBW infants.
