Sleep quality monitoring is important as a means to prevent health problems caused by sleep disorders. Polysomnography (PSG) is considered as the gold standard method to measure sleep quality. Photoplethysmography (PPG) has been developed as an alternative method to monitor sleep quality parameters, i.e. sleep stage duration and sleep efficiency, but its validity and precision are unknown. This research aims to validate the PPG method using electroencephalography (EEG), a sleep staging method based on brain wave frequency that is also used in PSG.
The validation of sleep quality monitoring system is conducted by laboratory experimental method. The first step of the validation is designing the algorithm for EEG system. The algorithm of the EEG system is designed to divide the recorded brain wave data into segments and calculate the power spectral density (PSD) value of each segment. The system then determines the dominant frequency of each segment according to the highest PSD value and assign the corresponding sleep stage to the segment. The percentage of each sleep stage and the sleep efficiency are calculated and compared with those provided by PPG measurement system.
The designed system successfully classified the wake and sleep stages with 96,94?curacy. The validation of PPG system using EEG yielded a Bland-Altman bias of 3.07% with 8.31% and -2.18% LoA for wake stage, -1.25% with 5,95% and -8.45% LoA for NREM, -1.82% with 1.71% and -5.35% LoA for REM, and -3,07% with -3.07% and 2.18% LoA for sleep efficiency, indicating high agreement between both systems.
