Xerostomia can be treated by administering saliva substitutes. Artificial saliva is given to lubricate the oral tissues. Artificial saliva based on catfish (Clarias batrachus) mucus has almost similar properties to human saliva, and the wetting ability of artificial saliva based on catfish mucus is not expected to change the properties of the denture significantly. This study aimed to determine the effect of using artificial saliva based on catfish (Clarias batrachus) mucus on the surface hardness of acrylic resin.
This study was carried out by immersing acrylic resin in artificial saliva based on catfish (Clarias batrachus) mucus as the treatment group and artificial saliva without catfish mucus as the control group for 7, 14, and 28 days. Acrylic resin was measured for surface hardness before and after immersion using a Vickers micro-hardness tester. The study data were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk, Levene, and Two-Way ANOVA tests.
The result of data analysis measuring the surface hardness of acrylic resin showed that there was no significant difference in the surface hardness of acrylic resin between using artificial saliva based on catfish (Clarias batrachus) mucus and artificial saliva without mucin with a significance level of p=0.576 (p>0.05). The decrease in acrylic resin hardness in the control group was greater than in the treatment group. The study concludes that there is no effect of immersing acrylic resin in artificial saliva based on catfish (Clarias batrachus) mucus on the hardness of acrylic resin.
