The drug management process is important to ensure the availability of drugs in hospitals. Drug management begins with the selection process carried out by the Drug and Therapeutics Committee based on certain considerations, then continued with the procurement, distribution, and use processes. The drug selection process must be carried out properly and effectively so that it can produce an effective and efficient Hospital Formulary. The purpose of this study was to determine the description of the drug selection flow and to evaluate the practice of drug selection in hospitals using indicator-based instruments.
This study uses a descriptive method using a research instrument in the form of an observation sheet. The study was conducted in a multi-centered study in 3 hospitals in Banyumas. Interviews were conducted with parties who were considered to play a role in the drug selection process in hospitals to sharpen the results of the evaluation of drug selection practices.
The results of the study showed that the modification of the indicator-based drug selection practice evaluation instrument obtained 28 qualitative indicators and 11 quantitative indicators. The instrument validation test was carried out using content validity with 3 expert panels. Drug selection in hospitals has involved the Drug and Therapeutics Committee consisting of specialist doctors, general practitioners, pharmacists, and other health workers. The drug selection process of the three hospitals is in accordance with the standard guidelines for compiling hospital formularies. The evaluation results show that the drug selection process has involved DTC, DOEN, FORNAS, Hospital Formularies, and Clinical Practice Guidelines. No hospital has used the defined daily dose basis in drug selection. The highest qualitative indicator achievement was at Prof. Dr. Margono Soekarjo Purwokerto Hospital 79%, Banyumas Hospital 75%, and AN NI’MAH Hospital 68%. The quantitative indicator achievement has 3 indicators that have been running optimally, namely the prescribed drugs are available at the hospital, the suitability of procurement items to the Hospital Formulary and the indicator of the suitability of prescriptions by doctors to the hospital formulary. The indicator-based drug selection evaluation instrument in hospitals can be implemented well.
