From Satire to Discourse: A Semiotic Analysis of Presidential Debate Memes in Indonesia's 2024 Election

Studi ini mengeksplorasi peran meme politik dalam membentuk wacana publik selama debat presiden Indonesia 2024. Berlandaskan pada semiotika Roland Barthes dan teori wacana Michel Foucault, penelitian ini menganalisis bagaimana meme berfungsi sebagai alat satir yang mengubah narasi politik yang kompleks menjadi artefak visual yang mudah diakses. Dengan pendekatan paradigma kritis, penelitian ini mengkaji elemen tekstual dan visual dari meme-meme terpilih untuk mengungkap makna denotatif dan konotatifnya, dengan fokus pada tema satire, mitos, dan perlawanan politik. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa meme tidak hanya mengkritik dan memparodikan tokoh politik, tetapi juga berperan sebagai instrumen keterlibatan publik, memperkuat suara ketidakpuasan, serta menjadi penyedia ruang partisipasi dalam wacana digital. Studi ini menyoroti sifat adaptif budaya meme dalam komunikasi politik, mencerminkan kecemasan masyarakat yang lebih luas tentang pemerintahan, demokrasi, dan kepemimpinan. Melalui kontekstualisasi meme dalam konteks sosial-politik unik Indonesia, penelitian ini memberikan kontribusi pada pemahaman mendalam tentang kekuatan semiotik dan retorika meme dalam lingkungan digital kontemporer.

This study explores the role of political memes in shaping public discourse during Indonesia's 2024 presidential debates. Grounded in Roland Barthes' semiotics and Michel Foucault's discourse theory, it examines how memes serve as satirical tools, transforming complex political narratives into accessible visual artifacts. Utilizing a critical paradigm approach, the research analyzes the textual and visual elements of selected memes to uncover their denotative and connotative meanings, focusing on themes of satire, myth, and political dissent. The findings reveal that memes not only critique and parody political figures but also act as instruments of public engagement, amplifying voices of discontent and also plays as a provider for participatory in digital discourse. This study highlights the adaptive nature of meme culture as it intersects with political communication, reflecting broader societal anxieties about governance, democracy, and leadership. Throughout the contextualization of the memes within Indonesia’s unique socio-political context, the research contributes to an in depth understanding of their semiotic and rhetorical power in contemporary digital environments.
