This study aims to determine the meaning of stunting through the communication experiences of mothers in rural areas in Manggarai Regency. Stunting prevention is always viewed from the clinical side. In fact, stunting needs to be prevented through the context of a communication approach, as shown by the results of research conducted by Lestari (2018), which found that interaction, communication, and social construction influence the process of preventing stunting. This research uses Herbert Mead's symbolic interaction theory to analyze the formation of meaning in the context of the mind, self, and society. In addition, Alfred Schutz's phenomenology will emphasize the importance of experience and inherited knowledge in shaping individual understanding and social interaction. The method used is phenomenology, which refers to Moustakas's reference. Based on the data collection through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, results show that mothers in rural areas use their local terms to interpret stunting. Furthermore, mothers' preferences in accessing stunting information tend to use traditional communication, such as direct interaction with midwives' religious and traditional leaders. The context of stunting in the Manggarai tribe is still influenced by beliefs in local traditions, such as food taboos and prohibited activities for pregnant women.
