This research illuminates the dynamics of prostitutes, money, and power in Mojotengah, Central Java. Based on the local history and literature, the practice of prostitution in Mojotengah has deep historical roots, starting from the colonial era to the industrial era. This phenomenon is not only triggered by economic factors, but also by social norms that have taken root and accepted by the local community.
This research reveals that prostitution in Mojotengah has created a shift in roles in the family, where the women who work as prostitutes take responsibility for becoming the breadwinner for their family, replacing the position of men who are usually the main breadwinners. Thus affected the dynamics of power within their families.
This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method to explore the phenomenon of prostitution in Mojotengah, Central Java. This study focuses on collecting verbal data through in-depth interviews and written and unwritten documents. This study also identifies that prostitution in Mojotengah is not only a job, but also functions as a tool to achieve social status and material wealth. Using the theory of power motivation by McClelland, this study explains how psychological motives such as the need for power and social status influence women's decisions to enter the world of prostitution. The results of the study show that although prostitution is often considered negative, in Mojotengah, this practice has become an integral part of social and economic life, providing significant financial benefits and power for its perpetrators.
