Narrative Policy Framework Approach of Analysing the Impact of Palm Oil Industries in Communities as Reported by News Media

The purpose of this research is to discuss the dispute that exist within the communities in palm oil industry and the correlation it has with their conditions. This research is guided using the Sustainable Development Goals which are set by the United Nation to determines and find which goals and aspects are being violated in the disputes. In correlation with the SDGs, the reasons of why such disputes against communities are being perpetrated are also to be found and describes. The data collected and used for this research are published disputes cases between communities and palm oil companies ranging from year 2004 until year 2024, which comes from digital newspaper publication by online news media outlet. In which focusing on disputes of social, economic, and justice aspects of the affected communities which are reside within the palm oil industrial area. Analyse of the disputes shows several issues that are faced and challenged by the communities particularly regarding the legality, environment, as well as human rights issues. The result shows that the islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan are the hotspots for cases of negative impacts faced by the communities in the form of disputes and violation by companies. In which the most common case of disputes are legality disputes in the form of land legality where the local community lands are forcefully taken with false claims for palm oil industry by the companies. Furthermore, the research also describes through narrative policy analysis regarding the relationship between the victims in the regards of the various impacts brought by the palm oil industries with the perpetrators of disputes which mainly are the companies which operates on the industrial scale on the sanctioned area which are often than not belonging to the local communities. Conclusion provided by this research after researching the impact in the communities shows how bad the situation is ranging from the polluted and damaged environment onto corruption of justice. Two important things that must be held high as the means to counters the situation are upholding the accountability of the companies and anti-corruptions, and the guarantee of the communities free from the misery brought by the negative of impacts through the preservation of rights.
