Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) is an additive manufacturing technique that builds models layer by layer. This method is widely used in the industry for prototyping with various materials, including polymers like Polylactic Acid (PLA). PLA offers advantages such as biodegradability, ease of use, and good printability. However, PLA produced by 3D FDM printing has lower mechanical properties compared to subtractive manufacturing methods like injection molding. One approach to enhancing its strength is through heat treatment annealing.
This study aims to investigate the effect of pressure variation during the annealing process on the tensile strength and porosity of PLA produced by 3D FDM printing. Specimens were printed using a Flashforge Inventor 3D printer with eSun brand PLA+ material of 1,75 mm diameter, following ASTM D638-Type IV standards. The annealing process was conducted at 150°C for 10 minutes in a drying oven, with the specimens placed in an aluminum mold and subjected to pressure in the form of providing a mass load on the top of mold of 0,8 kg, 1,6 kg, 2,4 kg, and 3,2 kg. After annealing, tensile testing and microstructural observation were performed on the specimens.
Results indicated that the specimen annealed with a pressure of 1.6 kg exhibited the highest tensile strength, with an average Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) of 50.98 MPa. This suggests that pressure variation during annealing affects the tensile strength of PLA, with a specific pressure limit to achieve maximum strength. Additionally, the applied pressure influences the porosity level of the material, which directly impacts its tensile strength.
