Artikel ini membahas tentang the gothicization of race dalam The Sea Beast (2022), yang menyoroti rasisme dan konstruksi musuh terhadap ras tertentu. Film ini mengkritik bagaimana narasi gotik melanggengkan kekerasan dan mendorong penonton untuk merenungkan peran mereka sebagai "monster" yang sebenarnya. Penulis berargumen bahwa The Sea Beast mengungkap dimensi konflik melalui konstruksi musuh, yang menggambarkan paralel dengan konflik dunia nyata yang dipengaruhi oleh estetika gotik. Film ini mengidentifikasi dua mekanisme utama konstruksi musuh: monsterisasi visual yang memperkuat stereotip dan penggambaran musuh sebagai sesuatu yang secara inheren jahat. Film ini juga mendorong pemikiran kritis tentang siapa yang mengkonstruksi narasi tersebut dan bias yang terlibat dalam mendefinisikan monster dan pahlawan. Penulis menekankan pentingnya literasi media, khususnya terkait konflik seperti Genosida Palestina mengingat manuver politik dapat dipengaruhi oleh opini publik.
