The National Awakening Party (PKB) is often considered as a political party that represents Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) society. However, survey show that most NU constituents no longer choose PKB as their representative in the state (LSI, 2023; Irawan, 2024; Azmi, 2024). Instead of assessing the decline in party electability as a failure of political parties in their representation function, using Representation claims theory (Saward, 2010) this research analyzes the PKB’s effort in achieving legitimacy of NU representation through claims presented in online mass media articles ahead of the 2024 election.
This research aims to map actor and audience responses to PKB representation claims and see how NU interests are constructed in claims produced by various political actors. This research uses a mixed analysis method that combines big data analysis (Discourse Network Analysis) and qualitative text analysis. Data was taken from various online news media articles produced since the declaration of the PKB General Chair as a vice presidential candidate until the end of the 2024 election campaign period.
The results of the research show that there are varying degrees of support and rejection of PKB's claim of representation towards NU. The construction of NU's interests is strictly contested, especially regarding kiai support and the similarity of the party and NU ideologies. The claims network also succeeded in proving Saward's (2010) hypothesis that groups that are often considered neutral and whose statements are considered objective facts are also involved in contesting their claims that are full of interests.
