The lean supply chain management strategy, supported by technological advancements, encourages the development of a more streamlined supply chain system to enhance efficiency in meeting customer demand. While the application of lean supply chain management offers advantages for companies, it also reduces flexibility within supply chain. With the increasing complexity of global supply chains, this approach is not always aligned with the lean supply chain concept. Therefore, risk management is needed to ensure that supply chains can endure disruptions that cause uncertainty.
One recommended risk management strategy in supply chains is dual sourcing, which involves using two suppliers to meet the company's product needs. Various optimization models for dual sourcing application have been developed, but increased complexity in supply chain affects the final decisions made by humans. This research focuses on observing how planners allocate orders in dual sourcing applications when faced with changes in demand. The method used in this study is an inventory management experiment focused on a single echelon, specifically the retailer.
The result indicates a change in planner behavior when there is a shift in demand, with the diversification index increasing by 0.268 during an increase in average demand and by 0.054 during a decrease in average demand. From the beginning of the experiment, each planner exhibited different behavioral tendencies. 10 out of 15 planners experiencing increased demand, and 9 out of 15 planners experiencing decreased demand, showed a tendency to perform more balanced dual sourcing. However, dual sourcing in both groups did not indicate improved company performance in meeting customer demand. On the contrary, dual sourcing led to an increase in total company costs. Therefore, the use of technology as a tool to assist in order allocation can be considered by planners.
