Agroforestry is a planting system popularly developed in Indonesia. However, it is often found that the productivity of land is less optimal due to several factors including the lack of precise determination of planting distances and the selection of commodities of crops to be planted under stands. This research aimed to determine the effects of planting distance from trees and varieties on the growth and yield of ginger plants grown under a two-year-old A. auriculiformis stand.
This research was designed using a randomized complete block design with two factors, namely the planting distance of ginger plants from the main plant A. auriculiformis (J1: midpoint of the vertical projection of the crown of A. auriculiformis between the stem and the outermost edge of the crown, J2: edge point of the vertical projection outer crown of A. auriculiformis, J3: planting point outside the vertical crown projection) and ginger varieties (emprit (V1), gajah (V2), merah (V3)). The total number of ginger seeds used was 81 and each variety consisted of 27. The parameters measured included the height, diameter, number of shoots, number of leaves, and fresh and dry weight of ginger.
Planting distance of ginger plants from A. auriculiformis trees had a significant effect on the parameters of number of shoots and dry weight of leaves. The plants planted farther from the A. auriculiformis had better growth and yield values than those planted closer to the trees. The ginger variety had a significant effect on the diameter, number of leaves, and the fresh and dry weight of rhizomes. The varieties of the emprit and the gajah showed better growth and yield than the merah. No significant interactions were observed between both treatments.
