The EAGLEs countries, as rapidly developing economies, face significant challenges in balancing domestic economic growth with macroeconomic stability amidst external shocks such as fluctuations in global oil prices, changes in U.S. monetary policy, and global financial market dynamics. This research aims to analyze the monetary policy response to external shocks through the interest rate channel in the Emerging and Growth-Leading Economies (EAGLEs) countries, namely China, India, Indonesia, South Korea, and Mexico. The variables used in this study include domestic variables (domestic policy interest rate, domestic exchange rate, 3-month domestic bond yield, domestic stock prices, and domestic inflation) and external variables (global oil prices, the Federal Reserve's policy interest rate, U.S. Treasury bond yield, and U.S. stock prices). The data used are in monthly time series format from 2012 to 2023.
Using the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM), this study finds that monetary policy in EAGLEs countries significantly responds to various external shocks. Empirical analysis indicates that shocks to global oil prices, the Federal Reserve's interest rate, U.S. Treasury bond yields, and U.S. stock prices have different impacts on the monetary policies of EAGLEs countries.
