One of the strategies/policies to deal with waste management problems in the Sleman Regency is to optimize the function of Green Open Space (RTH). RTH has a large and strategic area as a public facility, educational media space as well as a local management space for the waste it produces. This study aims to develop a strategy to optimize the function of Green Open Spaces in achieving a higher zero waste index (ZWI) value through various policies and concrete steps as well as developing a questionnaire to determine the community's response to the proposed optimization of RTH functions.
The three scenarios studied are the calculation of the existing ZWI value, then optimization by sorting and cleaning inorganic waste without changing the flow of organic waste to the landfill, and the third scenario is adding organic waste composting efforts as the highest virgin material coefficient factor. The results show that the current waste management condition is 14%, the second scenario increases the ZWI value to 0.16 (2% increase), and the third scenario significantly increases the ZWI to 0.69 (55% increase). Strategies to improve the waste management system in Denggung Green Open Space (RTH) include; not throwing organic waste into the landfill; composting organic waste in collaboration with the private sector; implementing policies and supervising street vendors (PKL), visitors, and managers to be able to sort waste at source and provide separate garbage bags; collaborating with local Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (UMKM) to provide environmentally friendly organic product packaging that is easily decomposed so that the volume of plastic waste that pollutes the environment is reduced, and the final step is to provide educational facilities to increase awareness and waste management in RTH Denggung to support the zero waste program. If the implementation of the ZWI optimization policy is carried out in all RTH, it will reduce 12.07 tons/day of waste. Further evaluation is needed regarding the success of RTH as educational spaces for waste management.
