Kebanyakan proses fisik atau biologi mengandung variabilitas yang dipengaruhi ruang (space) dan waktu (time). Pendekatan tradisional untuk space time untuk set data yang besar dan pemodelan untuk lokasi (ruang), waktu, dan interaksi ruang-waktu sangat terbatas. Wikle dan Cressie (2002) menawarkan suatu pendekatan untuk prediksi space time menggunakan reduksi dimensi dan menggunakan model statistik yang dinamik temporal dan deskriptif spasial. Pendekatan tersebut disebut space time Kalman filter. Model tersebut juga mengkontribusi komponen spasial non dinamik

Many physical or biological process involve variability over both space and time. A large dataset and the modelling of space, time, and spatio-temporal interaction cause traditional space time methods are limited. Wikle and Cressie (2002) present an approach to space time prediction that achieves dimension reduction and uses a statistical model that is temporally dynamic and spatially descriptive, called space time Kalman filter.
