Salmonella spp. and Staphylococcus aureus are bacteria commonly found to cause infections in both animals and humans. The improper use of antibiotics can lead to bacterial resistance, resulting in inefficient treatment of infections with antibiotics. This study aims to determine the resistance levels and risk factors for infections of Salmonella spp. and Staphylococcus aureus to enrofloxacin in dogs at shelters in the Sleman Regency.
This study used a cross-sectional study approach with a sample of 147 dogs from Sleman Regency shelters. Sampling were conducted using a simple random sampling method. The specimen were rectal swabs. Isolation and identification of Salmonella spp. were performed using Xylose Lysine Deoxycholate (XLD), Triple Sugar Iron Agar (TSIA), Lysine Iron Agar (LIA), and Gram staining. Isolation of Staphylococcus aureus was done using Mannitol Salt Agar (MSA), while identification involved Gram staining, catalase test, sugar fermentation test, coagulase test, and Voges Proskauer (VP) test. The Salmonella spp. and Staphylococcus aureus isolates were then cultured on Mueller-Hinton Agar (MHA) for sensitivity testing against enrofloxacin using the Kirby Bauer method. Information on risk factors were gathered using questionnaires, and data analysis were through descriptive, univariate and bivariate analysis.
Out of 147 samples, two isolates of Salmonella spp. and 28 isolates of Staphylococcus aureus were obtained. One isolate of Salmonella spp. and 28 isolates of Staphylococcus aureus were sensitive to enrofloxacin, with no resistant isolates found. Risk factors regarding maintenance management, individual information, and health status showed no difference (p>0,05) in the presence of both bacteria. This study indicates that Salmonella spp. and Staphylococcus aureus in dogs from shelters in the Sleman Regency are still sensitive to enrofloxacin.
