As part of ether group, dimethyl ether is a compound commonly used as alternative fuel source for vehicle and power plant. This compound has potential to become substitute of LPG due to its similar physical and chemical properties with propane and butane, but with better cetane number, lower gas emission, and higher energy efficiency. DME compound also very useful as raw material for fine chemical products, such as aerosol. DME can be produced from methanol dehydration using ?-alumina catalyst.
The raw material used for dimethyl ether production in this plant is methanol with AA grade. The methanol is transferred and compressed until 12,5 bara of pressure then the methanol is 80% vaporized and combined with recycle flow. The reactor feed is heated to the temperature of 250 oC and reacts adiabatically inside the reactor (R-201 A/B) at the pressure of 12 bara until it reaches 75% methanol conversion. The resulted product from the reactor (R-201 A/B) at gaseous phase then is transferred to a series of heat exchangers until it reaches saturated liquid state. After that, the DME product is purified in distillation column (T-301) until it reaches purity of 99,82%.
This DME synthesis plant with capacity of 210.000 tonne/year and area of 11,25 ha (112.500 m2) is planned to operate in Bontang, East Borneo, inside Kaltim Industrial Estate (KIE) at Guntung, North Bontang, Bontang City. For its operational, this chemical plant needs electrical power of 1038,38 kW, water flow of 1.446.198,46 kg/hour, steam of 78.777,99 kg/jam and air flow of 341,36 kg/hour for the instrument and 930,35 kg/hour for boiler burning process.
This chemical plant needs fixed capital of $29.975.928 + Rp322.018.271.000 and working capital of $45.662.235 + Rp27.009.866.000. This plant also needs employees in total of 266 people. Based on the economic analysis, this chemical plant will receive profit before tax of $23.158.638/year and profit after tax of $11.579.319/year. Based on investment analysis, the chemical plant has the value of return of investment (ROI) of 46,52?fore tax and 23,26?ter tax, pay-out time (POT) of 1,77 years before tax and 3,01 years after tax, break-even point (BEP) of 47,92%, shut down point of 33,36%, and discounted cash flow rate of return (DCFRR) of 23,56%. From economical perspective, this chemical plant is sufficiently interesting be considered further
