In a high-tension match of football, many spontaneous emotional responses are correlated with negative emotions. One of the intense emotions during football matches is swear words. Using a sociolinguistics approach, this study seeks to examine the swear words used by Aremania (male supporters) and Aremanita (female supporters) during football matches. This study aims to illustrate the differentiation of forms of swearing, the reference to swearing, and the linguistic features of swearing during football matches used by Aremania and Aremanita. The data were obtained through observation, Oral Discourse Completion Task (DCT) for participants who had chosen by specific criteria consisting of having experiences in watching Arema FC matches, and a questionnaire technique. A questionnaire technique aimed at 60 Aremania and Aremanita who have various backgrounds of study. A total number of six Aremania and six Aremanita are being interviewed. Subsequently, this research used the theory of swear words, language and gender, and linguistic features.
This study reveals interestingly that six forms of swearing were employed by Aremania—verbs, nouns, adjectives, clauses, phrases, and reduplication. Aremanita used four forms of swearing—nouns, adjectives, verbs, and clauses. Therefore, the reference employed by Aremania typically include eight references, i.e. activity, animals, circumstances, things, body functions, part of the body, professions, and kinship, in contrast, Aremanita supporters use seven categories of swear words including activity, animals, circumstances, things, function of the body, part of the body, and profession. Lastly, this research found that Aremania and Aremanita used linguistic features. Aremanita employed the euphemism of swear words, monikers, intensifiers, exclamation, and certain lexical words. Therefore, Aremania used monikers, intensifiers, engagement markers, and general lexical words.
