A Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) plant with a capacity of 200,000 tons per year is planned to operate for 330 days annually. The primary raw materials used are C4 Raffinate-1, imported from India, and methanol, sourced from PT. Kaltim Methanol Industri. The production process of MTBE involves the addition reaction of methanol to isobutylene, maintaining a molar ratio of methanol/isobutylene at 1.1 using an acid catalyst. The synthesis process of MTBE is an exothermic reaction conducted adiabatically at a temperature of 33.61°C and a pressure of 12 atm. The reactor employed in this process is an adiabatic fixed bed reactor. The product will be purified using a distillation column to obtain MTBE with a purity of 99%. In addition to the main product, a by-product, C4-Raffinate 2, will be produced and can be commercialized as a secondary product. To meet the utility requirements of the plant, 25.31 m³/hour of make-up water, a specific electricity supply 0.5 MW, and 36,038.33 m³/hour of dry air are needed. The MTBE plant is planned to be built in the Kaltim Industrial Estate with a total area of 132,712.54 m² and a total workforce of 200 employees. The establishment of this Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether plant requires a fixed capital of $116,794,132.00 and a working capital of $81,071,416.72. Economic analysis of this plant shows that it falls into the low-risk category because this process has been commercially implemented in several countries worldwide. The feasibility analysis indicates a pre-tax return on investment (ROI) of 35.07%; a payout time (POT) of 2.27; a discounted cash flow rate of return (DCFRR) of 19.00%; a break-even point (BEP) of 40.85%; and a shutdown point (SDP) of 20.60%. Based on the feasibility analysis, it shows that the preliminary design of the Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) plant with a capacity of 200,000 tons/year is attractive for further study.
