Postpartum estrus (PPE), or the first estrus following parturition, is a crucial factor influencing livestock reproductive efficiency and can be linked to overall livestock productivity. Body dimension measurements can be correlated with livestock productivity by evaluating the success of maintenance management practices. These measurements can also be utilized in the selection of breeding stock and serve as indicators for selecting cattle based on sexual maturity. This study aims to determine the impact of variation in the postpartum estrus interval (PPE) of Jabres beef cattle from Brebes on calf height and weight.
The study involved 25 Jabres beef cattle dams with recorded postpartum estrus data and their 40 calves. The research was conducted from November 2 to November 8, 2023, at a communal farm in Bantarkawung District, Brebes Regency, Central Java. The methodology included interviewing cattle farmers to collect data on the names and addresses of the Jabres cattle farmers, postpartum estrus (PPE) of the dams, age of the dams, number of offspring per dam, age of the calves, and cattle management practices. Measurements of Jabres calves included height, length, and chest circumference. The data were then analyzed descriptively and statistically using One Way ANOVA.
The data analysis results showed P>0.05, indicating no significant differences between the groups. The study concluded that the postpartum estrus interval of Jabres beef cattle dams, with a maximum calving frequency of up to 21 times, did not have a significant effect on calf height and weight.
