THE ACCEPTABILITY OF THE AMERICAN-ENGLISH VOICED POSTALVEOLAR APPROXIMANT SOUND BY UNIVERSITAS GADJAH MADA’S 2020 ENGLISH DEPARTMENT STUDENTS AND ITS CORRELATION WITH THEIR LISTENING AND SPEAKING TEST SCORE

Penelitian ini mencoba untuk menyelidiki penerimaan pengucapan bunyi voiced postalveolar approximant oleh orang Indonesia yang berbahasa Inggris dari Jurusan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Gadjah Mada serta korelasi antara skor Menyimak dan Berbicara dengan tingkat penerimaan pengucapan mereka. Sebanyak 600 data berupa rekaman audio kata-kata yang mengandung voice postalveolar approximant di tiga lokasi berbeda dinilai oleh informan berbahasa Inggris-Amerika untuk menentukan penerimaannya. Tingkat penerimaan kata dengan bunyi voiced postalveolar approximant pada posisi awal sebesar 93%, posisi tengah sebesar 95,5%, dan posisi akhir sebesar 96%. Secara keseluruhan, level keberterimaannya adalah Sangat dapat Diterima. Terakhir, dengan menggunakan Koefisien Korelasi Pearson, dapat ditentukan bahwa terdapat korelasi positif yang lemah antara tingkat penerimaan mereka dan nilai Menyimak dan Berbicara.

This research attempts to investigate the acceptability of Indonesian students from Universitas Gadjah Mada's English Department's pronunciation of the English voiced postalveolar approximant sound as well as the correlation between their Listening and Speaking (LnS) score with their acceptability rating. A total of 600 data in the form of audio recording of words containing voiced postalveolar approximant in three different locations were assessed by an American-English informant in order to determine their acceptability. The acceptability rate for words with voiced postalveolar approximant in the initial position is 93%, 95.5% for the middle position, and 96% in the final position. Overall, the level of acceptability is Highly Acceptable. Finally, Utilizing Pearson's Correlation Coefficient, it can be determined that there is a weak positive correlation between their acceptability rating and their LnS score.
