Dogs rank fourth as the most popular pets in Indonesia with a percentage of 10.1%. The large dog population is accompanied by health issues, some of which require surgical intervention. Anesthesia is a crucial stage before surgery, albeit with significant risks. This study aims to investigate the effects of ketamine-xylazine and propofol anesthesia on body temperature and oxygen saturation (SpO2) in local dogs. The research involved eight healthy local dogs divided into two groups: Group A received a combination of ketamine 10% (dose: 10 mg/kg) and xylazine 2% (dose: 2 mg/kg), while Group B was anesthetized with propofol 1% (dose: 7 mg/kg). Body temperature and SpO2 were monitored using a veterinary monitor. Data were analyzed using Two-Way ANOVA with SPSS 25.
The results showed that the administration of ketamine-xylazine and propofol to local dogs resulted in significant changes in body temperature reduction, especially in dogs anesthetized with propofol. However, the administration of ketamine-xylazine and propofol to local dogs did not show significant changes in oxygen saturation (SpO2), but dogs anesthetized with ketamine-xylazine experienced a lower decrease in oxygen saturation (SpO2) compared to those anesthetized with propofol.
