Behind the Tortured: Lily Bloom’s Posttraumatic Growth as Domestic Violence Effect in Hoover’s It Ends with Us and It Starts with Us

Isu
kekerasan dalam rumah tangga (KDRT) menjadi salah satu isu krusial dalam
masyarakat Amerika. Selain menjadi sesuatu yang dinormalisai oleh masyarakat,
banyak orang melihat KDRT sebagai tindakan yang hanya membawa dampak buruk bagi
para korban. Namun, KDRT juga bisa membawa perubahan positif. Di era sekarang,
isu ini diangkat melalui cara – cara yang menarik, seperti kontemporer novel.
Selain
membawa isu trauma, novel It Ends with Us dan It Starts with Us karya
Hoover juga membawa isu pertumbuhan paska trauma sebagai efek dari KDRT. Oleh
karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui beberapa aspek yang
diperlukan untuk memahami isu KDRT dalam masyarakat Amerika serta jenis trauma
yang dimiliki oleh Lily Bloom. Penelitian ini juga mengungkap pertumbuahan paska
trauma Lily Bloom beserta beberapa faktor penghambat yang mempengaruhi individu
penyitas trauma dalam mencapai pertumbuhan paska trauma mereka. Melalui metode
kualitatif, teori pertumbuhan paska trauma oleh Tedeschi dan Calhoun dan teori paksaan
pengulangan oleh Freud digunakan dalam menjawab rumusan masalah dalam
penelitian ini. Data yang digunakan diambil dari novel It Ends with Us dan
It Starts with Us dalam bentuk kalimat yang berjumlah 69 data.
Hasil
penelitian menujukkan bahwa isu KDRT tercermin dalam pengalaman Amerika, hal
ini dapat dilihat dari jenis kekerasan, sejarah KDRT di Amerika, dampak,
faktor, dan pencegahannya. Hasil kedua menunjukkan bahwa kekerasan fisik,
verbal, dan seksual merupakan penyebab trauma kekerasan yang dialami Lily
Bloom. Selain itu, Lily Bloom juga mengalami paksaan pengulangan saat ia
beralih dari memiliki ayah yang kasar sampai memiliki pasangan yang suka
mengainaya. Hasil ketiga penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Lily Bloom berhasil
mencapai pertumbuhan paska trauma melalui lima domain.
The issue of domestic violence has become
one of the crucial issues in American society. Besides being normalized in
society, people often see domestic violence as an act that only brings negative
impacts to the victims. It also brings some positive changes. In the present
era, this issue is brought up in appealing ways, including through contemporary
novels.
Besides bringing up the trauma issue,
Hoover’s It Ends with Us, and It Starts with Us also emphasizes
the positive changes in the domestic violence aftermath. Hence, this study aims
to discover some aspects of domestic violence along with Lily Bloom’s kinds of
violent trauma. This study also reveals Lily Bloom’s posttraumatic growth as a
domestic violence effect, including factors on why some people cannot achieve
their posttraumatic growth. Through a qualitative method, the theory of
posttraumatic growth (PTG) by Tedeschi and Calhoun and the theory of repetition
compulsion by Freud are used to answer the formulated research questions. The
data were taken from Hoover’s It Ends with Us and It Starts with Us
in sentences with 69 data in total.
The findings show that domestic violence is
reflected in the American experience, and it can be seen through the types of
violence, the history of domestic violence in the U.S., impacts, factors, and
preventions of domestic violence. Secondly, the finding has shown that
physical, verbal, and sexual abuse have contributed to Lily Bloom’s violent
trauma. In addition, Lily Bloom experiences repetition compulsion through the
shift from having an abusive father to an abusive partner. Thirdly, the finding
shows that Lily Bloom has achieved her posttraumatic growth through five domains.
