Jogjakarta has 8000 ha area of coastal area, which most area is infertile land. Cemara Udang (Casuarina equisatifolia L.) is planted as a "green belt" to protect the coast area from broadening of infertile land. The growth of Cemara Udang affected the environment particularly accumulation of litters and increasing population of soil microorganisms. The objective of _this research wac; to assess effect of Cemara Udang planting to soil organic carbon and the presence of ammonification bacteria. This research was done in the soil laboratory and biotechnology laboratory, Faculty of Forestry, Gadjah Mada University. Sampling was done in Samas Beach, Bantu!, Jogjakarta. Soil samples were taken from I m x 1 m plots made at the distance of 100 m, 120 m and 140 m from seashore. In each row, there were three plot positions namely near the trunk, under the crumpling crcwn and under the crown edge. Plots in soil without vegetation were made as control. Soil sample was assessed using Plate Count method for total bacteria, Most Protable Number for ammonification bacteria, and Walkey and Black method for soil organic carbon. The result showed, there was increasing of total ammonification bacteria and the content of soil organic carbon under stand of Cemara Udang. The greatest number of bacteria was 11.86 x 107 cfu at the distance of 120 m from the seashore under pile of tree crown plot. The greatest number of ammonification bacteria was 4.9 x 105 cfu at a distance of 120 m from the seashore in the plot near the trunk. The greatest content of soil organic carbon was I .23 % at a distance of I ?.0 m rrorn the seashore in the end of tree crown plot.
